Our client was looking for a whole-house battery backup solution and approached us to design a system that would work together with an existing solar ground-mount system and provide enough capacity to power their home as well as their small animal farm during a power outage. We did a load calculation and proposed to install 2 LG Chem Resu 10H batteries connected to one of the SolarEdge inverters. The batteries were installed inside the barn, utilizing an existing underground conduit going back to the main house. A new backed-up loads electrical panel was installed next to the main electrical panel and the protected circuits were moved over. Once the system was tested and passed the county inspection, we waited for the first power outage. It happened within the first 2 months and the owners happily reported that the switchover was instantaneous, and the battery performed as expected. One of the benefits of having solar with battery backup solution is that during an outage, the solar production continues uninterrupted and charges the batteries as they are being used – meaning that the battery really needs to have enough capacity to make it through the night, and as soon as the sun comes out, the battery can start recharging without any power interruption. Additionally, using SolarEdge monitoring platform, both solar power production and battery status can be monitored in real-time via a cloud-based monitoring platform directly on a smartphone or desktop computer. This allows for real-time adjustment of the home’s consumption in order to extend the battery’s capacity as long as possible. HVAC and other high load appliances typically cannot be backed up – but lights, refrigeration, fans, sump/sewer pumps, entertainment, internet, and most importantly – a coffee maker can be backed up during a power outage!
